Toward, Not Around
The Approach Move: a 5-minute exercise for what you've been avoiding
9 questions
Rep
As much as we move towards our goals there's things we're moving away from. A conversation. A decision. A feeling. A truth. Avoidance feels like protection, but it shrinks our lives over time. This exercise is to notice one thing you've been avoiding and explore a possible values-aligned way to move toward it instead. Before you begin, take one slow breath. There are no right answers here. Only what's true for you right now.

Take a breath. Some of the most important things in our lives sit on the other side of something uncomfortable. A hard conversation. An tough feeling. A decision we keep postponing. Flexibility isn't just about adapting. It's also about being willing to move toward the things that matter, even when part of you wants to move away.

Avoidance is a way of protecting ourselves. It's your nervous system trying to keep you safe from something that feels hard. The trouble is, avoidance usually makes the thing bigger in our minds, not smaller. The conversation gets heavier. The decision gets louder. The feeling takes up more space. Moving toward it, in small steps and on your own terms, is how it gets lighter.

Most people spend a lifetime steering around the things that matter most. You just stopped long enough to look. You named what you've been avoiding. You looked at what it's been costing you. You chose a value to lead with. You picked a small move, and a when. That's how flexibility grows. Not in the big moments, but in the small approach moves you make on purpose.
