Most Christian school leaders already believe their staff are called to this work, not just employed by it. Almost none have put a number next to what it costs to actually protect that calling, against what it costs to lose a teacher, or run a school on staff who are running on empty. So we pulled the research and ran it.
None of that is only a staffing-budget problem. A systematic review of 14 studies covering more than 5,000 teachers and 50,000 of their students found that teacher burnout is linked to lower reading and math scores, and less academic growth, in the students they teach.&sup7; The cost of an unsupported teacher shows up in the classroom long before it shows up in an exit interview, or a resignation letter that starts with “I’ve prayed about this.”
Prevention runs in hundreds of dollars per staff member, per year. Reaction runs in the tens of thousands per departure, in turnover and coverage costs your school is already paying whether it trains for it or not.
Mental Fitness is the training that sits upstream of every number above: staff who can hold steady under pressure, recover between hard days, and stay in the calling instead of walking out of the building. That’s the rep nobody in that second list got to take.
The honest question isn’t whether you can afford proactive training for the people carrying your mission. It’s whether you can afford another year of paying for its absence.
